MN Rehab Asso Annual Fall Conference - breakout sessions

Do you help people who are encountering barriers to employment? Ever walked out of a session wondering why your client wasn't "buying in" — even though you had all the right resources, all the right answers? You're not alone, and there's a better way.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is one of the most researched, most practical communication approaches for helping people move toward change — especially when that change feels complicated, scary, or just plain inconvenient. Ambivalence isn't a roadblock to work around. It's the work.

Half-Day Thursday Afternoon: Get Grounded
We'll kick things off with the "why" and "how" of MI — the spirit, the core skills (hello, OARS), and the mindset shift that turns "convincing" into "collaborating." Expect real talk, real practice, and a few aha moments. You'll leave with tools you can use in your very next client conversation.

Half-Day Friday Morning: Level Up
Day two is for practitioners ready to sharpen their craft. We'll dig into more advanced skills — what to do to support those not yet ready to change, strengthening change talk, and navigating the messier, more nuanced conversations that don't fit neatly into a textbook example. Bring your tough cases; your unique experience can help shape our learning together.

This isn't a sit-and-listen session. Come ready to practice, reflect, laugh a little, and leave with skills you can use Monday morning.
